The Maspalomas Lighthouse

The lighthouse of Maspalomas was built by Gran Canaria Ingineer Juan Leon y Castillo (1834-1912). Around that time the area was no more then unhabitated wasteland, cut of from the rest of the Island. For the construction of the Lighthouse a temporary dock was build to unload materials, as it coud only be accessed by sea.
Building work lasted until 1889 when the actual lantern was put in, whos optical structure was manufactured  that year in Paris.
The Lighthouse was lit up on first of February 1890.
It is a very impressive building and rises up 54 meter high. In 2005 it was declared a cutural value in the category of historical monument.
